LAS VEGAS – External hard drives have become increasingly integral to our digital life. After all, you need someplace to put your ever-growing cache of digital music, video, photo, and data files. But at CES 2007, Seagate launches storage solutions that literally think outside the box.
The company's new family of FreeAgent "data movers" combines integrated software, online content management tools, and a contemporary design to ensure you have access to your stored content as well as your Internet favorites, computer settings, e-mail, and instant messages wherever you may be.
"It's literally about being able to escape the confines of your desktop or your laptop—and have your content available to you where you need and when you need it," said Jim Druckrey, Seagate Branded Solutions's senior VP and general manager. "The fact that there's a hard drive inside is really secondary."
The FreeAgent data movers come in three different lines. The FreeAgent Pro line of desktop devices iis aimed at prosumers and anyone serious about their digital content but want to stay connected to it. They sport an slim design and base-mounted cables and come in a brushed aluminum espresso-brown hue.
All FreeAgent Pro data movers include an interchangeable modular interface system that provides both a combo USB 2.0 and eSATA interface, or dual FireWire 400 ports. List prices range from $199.99 (320GB) to $419.99 (750GB).The included software allows consumers to automatically synchronize content users select wherever they want it—copying your e-mail and contacts from Mircosoft Outlook to an iPod, for instance, or auto-loading photos to a Shutterfly account, and syncing your "My Documents" folders to the FreeAgent Pro drive.
FreeAgent Pro data mover includes access to a private Seagate Internet Drive, an online service that offers round-the-clock access and the ability to share files from anywhere via the Web. The account, with 500MB of online space, is free for the first six months and can be upgraded.
The FreeAgent Go and Go Small lines are both portable solutions meant for college students and mobile consumers. To access their computing environment (Web favorites, passwords, and settings, for instance), users just plug the device in any Windows-based PC's USB 2.0 port—no need to lug around a laptop or be near your primary desktop PC. After you unplug it from the system, you leave no trace on the host computer—no passwords, no files, and no Web history.
The ultra-compact form factor of the Seagate FreeAgent Go Small (12GB) data mover provides the same innovative software features as its FreeAgent Go siblings in a drive only slightly bigger than a matchbox. Its "pocket-knife" style USB connector folds back into the solution, and the drive is USB-powered—no cables to lug around.
